Eye-Opening Life Lessons from Judging a Miss Teen Beauty Pageant

As a guest judge at a regional Miss Teen beauty pageant, I gained firsthand insights into a competitive world I knew little about. Preparing at home, I watched episodes of Toddlers & Tiaras and was stunned by the industry's scale and intensity.

Arriving at the airport hotel for the two-day event, I laughed, sighed, and absorbed valuable lessons. First, kudos to the families who travel, support, and prepare these young competitors—some as young as 6—for such demanding events. Judging older teens alongside a panel of three others, I observed poise and precision over four intense hours. Here are the key takeaways:

  • Pursuing dreams comes at a cost: The investment was evident—dresses, travel, lodging, and more, often totaling thousands of dollars. Some secured sponsorships; others made family sacrifices. The lesson? Your dreams demand real commitment, but the rewards match your effort.
  • Know yourself before competing: Contestants ranged from nervous and scripted to confidently authentic. Those at ease in their own skin advanced, thanks to that elusive 'X-Factor'—genuine comfort and charisma that outshines superficial appeal.
  • We all crave victory: Participation awards don't satisfy; we're wired to win. I respected the raw disappointment of those who fell short, even if not always expressed ideally. Losing after such effort hurts.
  • Shine when it's your moment: In the spotlight—walking, answering questions, showcasing personality—the standouts radiated authenticity. Looks were similar, but their unique shine set them apart. Life favors those bold enough to be themselves.

Judging was exhausting, mirroring life's daily auditions where we chase goals under scrutiny. Yet, we ultimately control our outcomes. Pageants thrive on stress and anticipation, but true winners emerge by embracing their potential—no crown required. Just look in the mirror.

See you at the TOP!

Another key insight: Perfectionism can hinder progress. Instead, adopt a completionist mindset to focus on achieving your goals and conquer your need for perfection.
