Work-from-Home Mom: Pros and Cons from My Real Experience

As a seasoned work-from-home mom and freelance writer, I've navigated the realities of balancing motherhood and career under one roof. It's a dream for some, a challenge for others—and definitely not as easy as outsiders think. Drawing from my own journey, here's an honest look at the upsides and downsides.

Work-from-home mom: Conscious choice or happy accident?

My path to working from home wasn't planned. I lost my job while pregnant, found myself at home, and launched my freelance business there. Looking back, it was a silver lining. Though I cherished my previous role, this shift opened doors to flexibility I now value deeply.

Pros and cons of being a work-from-home mom

Key advantages at a glance:

  • No childcare costs—I've saved every cent so far.
  • Continued breastfeeding my daughter at 13 months, which might not have been feasible in a traditional office.
  • Front-row seat to all my daughter's milestones, thanks to being home daily.
  • Household chores like dishes, laundry, and vacuuming done on my schedule, slotted between tasks.
  • Beautiful day? I work from the garden.
  • True flexibility—I work evenings, early mornings (even 4 a.m.), or whenever suits.

The challenges to consider:

  • No reliable on-call sitter means planning ahead for external commitments.
  • Toddlers ignore deadlines and 'do not disturb' signs—especially the little ones.
  • Sick days derail routines: fever, teething, or tummy troubles mean late-night catch-ups.
  • Work bleeds into evenings; no clean 'off' switch like leaving an office at 5 p.m.
  • Others assume 'home = available' for visits. (Spoiler: I'm working! 😛)

From years freelancing with kids, I've learned what makes it sustainable. I shared more in a previous post.

Essential tools for thriving as a home-based working mom:

  • A go-to babysitter for emergencies.
  • A rock-solid schedule.
  • Resilience for curveballs.
  • A dedicated, comfortable workspace.
  • Full support from your partner or home team—this one's non-negotiable for me.

Partner backing makes all the difference.
