5 Reasons Part-Time Work is a Game-Changer for Me as a Working Mom

Media reports frequently note that Dutch women work part-time far more often than women in other European countries. Some economists criticize this trend, claiming it costs society money and slows economic growth.

After my daughter was born, I chose part-time work myself. Despite the reduced income, I'm thrilled with my decision and grateful for the flexibility our society offers. My career has taken a backseat, but I still love my job and wouldn't change a thing. Here are my top five reasons for embracing part-time work.

My reasons for working part-time

More time for my child

The biggest reason is spending quality time with my daughter, Laura. On my part-time days off, we enjoy relaxed, stress-free days together—no rushing to work, just going with the flow. I stay mostly offline, checking emails only if absolutely necessary. Sure, the next day at work might be busier to catch up, but that's okay—tomorrow is a new day.

Less childcare

With part-time hours, Laura attends daycare no more than 2.5 days a week. We're happy with her daycare and she loves it, but I'm relieved to limit it. My husband's Friday afternoons off and Grandpa's biweekly babysitting help create a perfect mix of care and home time for her.

More time to do fun things together

On days off, we head to Laura's favorite spots: playgrounds, petting zoos, swimming pools, or the library for storytime and coffee. Before motherhood, I never imagined loving these outings so much. It's precious time I cherish, especially since it avoids cramming everything into hectic weekends.

More time for (new) friends

Pregnant friends warned me: "You'll make mom friends soon." I was skeptical at first. The early baby days left me exhausted from juggling work and motherhood, so seeing old friends was enough. About 18 months in, things clicked. My neighbor has kids Laura's age and shares my part-time day—pure coincidence? We've built a strong friendship through playdates.

The same happened with another mom I met at a training; our schedules aligned, leading to coffee chats while our girls played. She's now a close friend and occasional babysitter. These bonds thrive thanks to part-time flexibility.

And last but least: More time for myself

My days off revolve around Laura, with chores like laundry, shopping, and cooking squeezed in. Evenings become my recharge time: yoga, running, cozy couch sessions with tea and magazines. It keeps me energized and present as a mom. Plus, I occasionally blog for Mams at Work 😉.
