Pros and Cons of Spending More Time with Your Kids: A Mom's Real Experience

Are you a dedicated stay-at-home mom who thrives on daily time with your children? Or do you prefer a busy work schedule? Maybe you're somewhere in between. I've never swung to extremes, deliberately choosing to prioritize my kids. I shifted from part-time office work to home-based freelancing during school hours, allowing me to be fully present otherwise. It's an immense privilege, though not without its challenges.

Spending Quality Time with My Children

A year and a half ago, I worked outside the home a few days weekly, with my kids in daycare or after-school care. Now, I work from home, picking them up daily from school. My youngest attends preschool three mornings a week, which I use for focused work—along with many evenings. As a self-employed professional, I control my schedule flexibly. Afternoons bring me back fully as their devoted mom. This lifestyle offers clear benefits and drawbacks, drawn from my firsthand experience.

The Benefits of Being There Full-Time

Here are the profound upsides for our family:

  • Consistent structure and clear rules, giving kids a solid foundation
  • Ample rest when they need it
  • Deep bonds through hugs, meaningful talks, and cherished memories
  • No stress over sick days or daycare logistics
  • Plenty of time for meals, laundry, and household tasks

The Drawbacks I Face

Of course, every upside has trade-offs—mostly personal for me. The kids thrive from my presence, though they might tire of my reminders! 😊

  • Limited variety: Weekly routines feel predictable (school drop-offs and pick-ups dominate)
  • Heightened annoyances: More time together means more friction, nagging, and tears—leading to my occasional frustration
  • Less savoring special moments, as they're routine rather than rare
  • Scarce personal time: Home life blurs 'me time' compared to office breaks

Still, I'm grateful beyond words. Balancing work I love with full presence lets me nurture my three kids into confident adults—hoping they still want Mom around!
