University Study: Video Games Are the Most Effective Work Break for Boosting Mood and Productivity

Workplace relaxation areas can significantly enhance productivity. Beyond the iconic slides and ping-pong tables in Silicon Valley offices, video games stand out as particularly effective for improving employee morale—outperforming simple relaxation breaks or tech-free downtime. Researchers at the University of Central Florida in Orlando tested this with 66 employees. They first assigned a computer task to induce "cognitive fatigue," then split participants into three groups for a 5-minute break: one played the video game Sushi Cat, another followed guided relaxation instructions, and the third sat quietly without phones or computers.

Video Games Proven to Elevate Mood and Reduce Stress

Stress levels and mood were measured throughout. The results were clear: those who skipped video games reported feeling less engaged with their work, heightening stress. Relaxation participants saw reduced anxiety, but only the Sushi Cat gamers felt markedly better post-break. Lead researcher Michael Rupp explains: "We often push through the day nonstop to complete tasks, but evidence shows this isn't optimal. Strategic short breaks with engaging activities like video games help release pressure and recharge effectively." This peer-reviewed study offers compelling evidence for integrating gaming into work routines—science approves.
