Portugal Tops InterNations' Expat Survey as World's Most Welcoming Country

Every year, InterNations—the world's largest network for expats—surveys thousands to rank the most welcoming countries. This year, Portugal claims the top spot, with Taiwan in second and Mexico third.

The Expat Insider Survey polled 13,000 expatriates across 188 countries on key factors like quality of life, salary satisfaction, cultural vibrancy, ease of making friends, and local hospitality.

Portugal: The Only European Nation in the Top 10

As noted by Volta ao Mundo, this marks the first time Portugal has been crowned the most welcoming country for expats. The data backs it up: 94% of expats in Portugal describe locals as 'very friendly,' 'helpful,' and 'caring.' 58% find it easy to build new friendships, and 47% plan to stay permanently.

The full Top 10 includes Cambodia, Bahrain, Costa Rica, Oman, Colombia, Vietnam, and Canada. France ranks 55th out of 65, with expats citing locals as 'aloof' and 'unwelcoming.' The bottom: Kuwait (65th), Austria (64th), and Switzerland (63rd), where hospitality falls short. Portugal sets a clear example.
