Embracing Authentic Motherhood: 5 Key Questions Every Mom Should Ask

Before becoming a mother, I envisioned myself as a dedicated parent—attentive to my children and family—while balancing a fulfilling career I love, especially with life's rising costs. I refused to let motherhood sideline my passions: I'd stay active, maintain my social life, and pursue hobbies. My goal was clear: craft an authentic motherhood on my own terms.

How Can You Create Authentic Motherhood?

Then came baby #1, followed two years later by baby #2. Life shifted dramatically, especially in how I managed my time after the second child arrived. Around me, other mothers navigate their worlds uniquely—some with one child, others with four. No two approaches are alike; everyone prioritizes differently.

Some manage gym sessions twice a week alongside packed social calendars. Others, despite wanting to, simply can't—for financial reasons, exhaustion, or different priorities. Who's to judge? We all carve our paths.

Staying True to Yourself Is the Hardest Part

As a mother of two, I've learned that authentic motherhood—being genuine, credible, and real—is profoundly challenging. Here, 'authentic' means living as your true self, honoring your desires without pretense or compromise.

Many mothers I know grapple with this: How do you nurture your kids while caring for yourself? Without chasing unattainable ideals, comparing endlessly, or forcing ill-fitting roles? Social media showcases extremes, making us question if we're enough. Aren't we complicating it unnecessarily?

The 5 Questions I Ask Myself

I've stopped fixating on others' highlight reels. Instead, I focus on five guiding questions to align my life with my values and my family's needs. This keeps me grounded and present. Want to try them? Here's how they work:

  1. How am I? Reflect on your feelings, thoughts, worries, physical signals, and core priorities. As the family anchor, your well-being sets the tone for what you can give.
  2. How are my family members? Regularly check in—notice if anyone needs extra support.
  3. What’s needed now, for each of us? Identify requirements to move forward: rest, resources, or something else?
  4. How will I address it? Plan your next step mindfully. I approach this intentionally, often with prayer for clarity.
  5. When will I start? Prioritize urgency, create a realistic plan, and act. Seek help when needed—you don't have to do it alone.

Authenticity feels like the ultimate gift. These questions help me stay true, fostering genuine motherhood naturally. I hope my children grow the same way—guided by their essence, not external pressures.
