New Research: Accepting a Job Below Your Level Can Harm Future Career Prospects

Accepting a job below your skill level may signal to future employers a lack of commitment or competence, potentially hindering your job search, according to recent research. To investigate this and explore gender differences, the study analyzed 2,420 fictitious applications for 1,210 real job openings in five U.S. cities. All profiles featured identical details, including six years of prior experience, varying only by gender and the previous year's employment status: full-time, part-time, temporary, below-level, or unemployed.

Results showed that just 5% of men and women in below-level roles received callbacks—half the rate of those in appropriate full-time positions. Part-time work reduced callbacks for men to under 5%, but had no impact on women. Temporary roles via agencies showed minimal effects for either gender. 'This research demonstrates a clear penalty for underemployment, regardless of gender, with added challenges for men in part-time roles,' the researcher concluded.
