The best ways to save money when you go out

Going out can be an expensive joke, especially if you do it often. Some people don't care how much they spend, but not everyone has that luxury. Fortunately, having a good time doesn't have to mean going broke right away. With a little planning and creative thinking, you can have a great night and still have money left in your pocket at the end of the night.

1. Pay with cash.
The best ways to save money is to pay with cash. If you only take what you want to spend, you can't spend more than you want. Make sure you bring enough with you for transport home.

2. Check for drink specials.
Sometimes bars offer their own special drinks on certain nights or specials at certain times. They don't call it 'happy hour' for nothing!

3. Make use of discount coupons.
Many restaurants offer online discount coupons or free snacks for signing up for their newsletter, for example. Also on deal sites you can find many great offers on everything from restaurants to days out.

4. Go for a takeaway.
Get your meal from your favorite restaurant. You'll save money on the tip and drinks won't add up to your bill. Make it a cozy movie night at home in front of the TV or have a picnic in the park or on the beach when the weather is good!

5. Stick to beer and wine.
The best way to save money is to drink beer and wine. These are usually cheaper than cocktails and stronger drinks.

6. Share some snacks.
If you're going out with a few people, share some snacks instead of eating large meals. You will feel satisfied and come home with more money in your wallet.

7. Drink water before you go.
You'll feel fuller instantly and are more likely to order a smaller meal. If you drink alcohol, you not only drink less by drinking a glass of water in between, but you also feel less dehydrated the next morning and you have less chance of a hangover.

8. Go out on a Monday or a Tuesday.
Mondays and Tuesdays are the least busy days for bars and restaurants, so these are usually the nights when you'll find the best specials.

9. Think outside the box.
Skip expensive concerts and find a bar where musicians play. It's a great way to discover new music. Instead of an expensive theater evening, look for a local theater production. Check the local bookstores for author visits and then go out for a drink to discuss them. Museums sometimes offer special rates. During the summer months, parks often have free concerts, plays, and outdoor movies. The possibilities are endless.

Saving money is a lot easier if you have fun while doing it; and, contrary to popular belief, a tight budget doesn't mean you can't go out and have fun. It may take a bit of preparation and imagination, but it's possible to stay on a budget and still enjoy good food, good times and maybe a new adventure!
