Seven out of 10 Dutch professionals credit their career achievements to two or more key individuals, with first employers and previous managers exerting the strongest influence on their development. Additionally, 43% report having a steadfast work buddy in their current role—prioritized more for daily job satisfaction (70%) than career advancement (63%). These findings come from LinkedIn's latest research.
While one in three Dutch professionals attributes success to multiple people rather than a single figure, the top 10 influencers rank as follows:
First employer
Previous manager
Colleague in the same position
Teacher
Line manager
Current manager
Boss
University lecturer
Mentor
Inspiring business entrepreneur
A work buddy undeniably boosts workplace happiness, though such connections aren't universal—46% of professionals have one. These relationships enhance self-confidence (46%), manage stress (53%), and make the workday more enjoyable (70%).
That said, work buddies have limited impact on career progression. Moreover, 77% of professionals wouldn't consider leaving their job if their buddy departed.
