Struggling to Land a Permanent Contract? Explore Interim Work: 5 Alternative Paths #3

Interim Work

In interim work, you sign an assignment contract with a staffing agency, which places you temporarily in a company—for example, to cover absences or handle activity surges. While fixed-term contracts (CDD) are standard, agencies also offer permanent contracts (CDI)—a role once held exclusively by Pôle Emploi—and since March 2014, the innovative "temporary CDI," blending CDI security with mission variety. Once seen as precarious and for low-skilled roles, interim work is now often a deliberate choice.

Why the rise? Interim roles provide rights equal to—or better than—permanent employees, often with higher pay, plus superior work-life balance. After 14 years in public service, nurse Emmanuelle switched to interim: "to avoid routine and learn new methods." "At Appel Médical, I started immediately. Now I earn 1.5 times more, manage my time better, and even took Christmas off for the first time!" For Gen Y, it offers a broad market view to match personal values with the right employer.

Before diving in: Select agencies by profile—generalist or specialized (e.g., paramedical, construction). Adaptability is key: "You must prove yourself every time," says Emmanuelle.
