Some jobs stand out due to unusual hours, specialized skills, or ties to the mysterious, sparking unease. Researchers at Knox College in Illinois explored this in an online study with 1,300 participants. They rated professions on a creepiness scale from 0 (not creepy) to 5 (very creepy). As reported in The Independent, clowns topped the list at 3.71—ironic for entertainers meant to bring joy.
The study highlights what makes a job creepy: ambiguous threats (think clowns), odd hours like night shifts, or behaviors that feel off. Men's professions often rank higher, perceived as more physically threatening by both genders. We instinctively guard against those who touch unexpectedly, show unusual nonverbal cues, or seem fascinated by death or atypical sex, per the researchers.
On the hobby front, collecting dolls, insects, or teeth—or even birdwatching—ranks high on the creepy scale.
Here's the full ranking of the creepiest professions (with their scores):
1. Clown (3.71)
2. Taxidermist (3.69)
