Cats in the Japanese Office: A Proven Strategy to Combat Burnout

Since June 24, 2015, France's National Assembly has recognized burnout as an occupational disease amid a global rise in work-related illnesses. In Japan, Hidenobu Fukuda, CEO of Ferray Corporation, introduced an innovative solution. In 2000, at an employee's request, he permitted cats in the office. Today, nine cats roam freely, eating and sleeping throughout the premises.

Animals as Effective Anti-Stress Therapy

The presence of these felines boosted employee productivity and well-being, inspiring other Japanese companies to adopt similar practices. Pasona Group went further, hiring two goats and two alpacas in 2011 for therapeutic purposes. Employees report lower anxiety and stress levels, with the animals' calm demeanor—even during naps—creating a soothing office environment. This approach highlights the growing evidence for animal-assisted wellness in professional settings.
