Asir: Essential Guide to Break-Up Assistance for French Retirees

Break-up assistance (Asir) provides one-time support to retirees facing exceptional life disruptions, such as a spouse's death. Delivered by France's National Old Age Insurance Fund (CNAV), this aid enhances material and psychological well-being under strict conditions.

What is Break-Up Assistance (Asir)?

Asir offers short-term help from CNAV to retirees hit by major events like spousal death, institutionalization, or hospitalization. It addresses temporary disruptions to daily life, aiming to improve home conditions for those in crisis.

This one-off payment helps cover home services costs, including administrative support, budget advice, household tasks (maintenance, shopping, meals, transport), minor adaptations to maintain autonomy, and emotional guidance. Aid lasts up to 3 months, capped at €1,800.

Who Qualifies for Break-Up Assistance (Asir)?

Eligible are general social security retirees primarily affiliated with this scheme, living in France, who faced a rupture within the last 6 months disrupting normal life. This includes those in GIR 5-6 dependency levels—needing occasional aid for bathing, meals, or cleaning but still relatively autonomous.

Note: Asir is unavailable to recipients of APA, PSD, ACTP, PCH, or MTP (for disability pensions), or those in host families.

How to Apply for Break-Up Assistance (Asir)

Apply within 6 months of the event (e.g., spouse's death, hospitalization, retirement home entry) via the form on lassuranceretraite.fr or your regional fund. Social services can assist with submission to CNAV.

A home visit assesses needs based on your situation, local services, resources (yours and spouse's), CNAV scale, and budget limits.
