5 Proven Strategies Intelligent Leaders Use to Master Self-Influence

Leadership hinges on influence, and the most critical person to influence is yourself. So, how do we best cultivate that inner influence?

Drawing from years of leadership coaching and observation, here are five strategies the smartest leaders employ to influence themselves effectively.

1. Embrace what you can't control.

Identify what you can change and act on it. For what you can't, shift your attitude. I've learned through experience that worry rarely solves problems—it's my default until I consciously override it. Making peace frees mental space for solutions.

Worrying about the uncontrollable is like digging deeper in a hole—you feel productive, but it worsens everything. Release it to welcome fresh ideas. Every life has ups and downs; channel energy into what you can shape, starting with your mindset.

2. Release the past.

Dwelling on mistakes or others' faults gains nothing, especially against ourselves. Learn from history, but live for the future—today is your bridge. Our best tomorrow starts with purposeful action now.

Preparation today prevents tomorrow's regrets. Savor today's beauty; assign it to the future, and you'll miss it entirely. Obsess over yesterday, and it's gone.

3. Prioritize what matters.

Life overflows with distractions. Skip the rabbit trails and trivial pursuits that drain your energy—this avoids what Marshall Goldsmith calls "vicarious living." Gossip, celebrity drama, or endless debates about acquaintances lead nowhere.

Most daily chatter is noise. Ask: Is this worth my time? Project it forward: In 10 hours? 10 days? 10 years? The 10/10/10 rule clarifies value before investing emotionally or arguing to be "right."

4. Invest in your growth.

This isn't selfish—it's essential. You can't pour from an empty cup. By nurturing your skills, health, and mindset, you gain more to give others. Dedicate time, money, and energy to personal development; it's the foundation for impacting those around you.

5. Welcome feedback for authentic growth.

Feedback reveals blind spots and builds skills, but its true power lies in fostering transparency. It's not about pleasing others—it's self-discovery. Cultivate curiosity and openness to become trustworthy, optimistic, flexible, and resilient.

People aren't drawn to perfection; they're magnetized by authenticity.

In a world pressuring conformity, self-influence is liberating. Others may seem richer, smarter, or funnier, but embracing your true self attracts genuine connections—and deepens self-love.
