Online networking platforms like LinkedIn make it easy to expand professional connections and discover job opportunities with minimal effort. However, a recent study reveals that the strength of those connections is what truly drives job offers.
The researchers surveyed 424 LinkedIn users—all graduates and current or recent job seekers—about their job search methods across five key channels: internet job boards (e.g., Monster.com), online social networks (e.g., LinkedIn), offline friends and family, newspapers and other print media, and recruitment agencies or career centers.
Internet job boards generated the most job offers, followed closely by LinkedIn. While weaker ties on LinkedIn surfaced slightly more opportunities, the actual interviews and offers predominantly came from strong connections.
