39% of Women Report Sexual Harassment at Work: Insights from Viva's Survey

A striking 39% of women report experiencing sexual harassment in the workplace, prompting behavioral changes for many. According to Viva's research, 14% adopt an aloof demeanor toward male colleagues for protection, while 13% opt for inconspicuous attire.

Over 500 women aged 25-45 participated in Viva's comprehensive online survey on workplace sexual harassment. The study defined sexual intimidation broadly, encompassing any perceived coercion for sexual favors—not just physical assaults or demands for sexual acts in exchange for promotions, but also sexist remarks and unwanted attention like leering.

Nearly 39% of respondents faced harassment to varying degrees, with 3% reporting attempted assaults or rape. Common incidents included touching, ambiguous comments on bodies or clothing, and sexual messages. About one in ten women received sexually oriented texts occasionally. Sexual jokes topped the list at 29%, followed by suggestive remarks about clothing, bodies, or sex lives (24%), and unnecessary touching (11%).
