Women with Disabilities Face Double Discrimination in the Workplace: Defender of Rights Report

A "double discrimination." That's how Jacques Toubon, the Defender of Rights, describes the challenges in his comprehensive report, "Employment of Women with Disabilities," released on Monday, November 14, during the 20th Employment Week for People with Disabilities.

Women with disabilities encounter greater workplace discrimination than their male counterparts. "Gender, much like disability, influences educational trajectories and, consequently, professional integration," the report explains, drawing on extensive data and analysis.

Making Women with Disabilities Visible

A key issue is the scarcity of visible, successful role models among women with disabilities. They "appear entirely absent from key societal arenas—such as media, politics, business, and the arts—where even men with disabilities are underrepresented," the report notes.

To address this, the Defender of Rights outlines 12 targeted recommendations. These include promoting successful role models to foster positive identification, standardizing disability definitions across studies, enhancing accessibility in schooling and higher education, and launching tailored prevention campaigns.
