Office Fun Challenge #1: Master Unexpected Humor for Better Engagement

1. Play Against Expectations

"A clown is like an aspirin, except it works twice as fast," said Groucho Marx. Boosting morale when everyone's already laughing is like offering chocolate at a Nutella festival: redundant at best, off-putting at worst. But serve Serrano ham at a cheese festival? Instant success!

Take a cue from American pros who nail timing. A typical seminar might drone, "Hello and thank you all for having traveled 457 km by autoberth to join us at Formula 0 in Arcachon." In the US? "Dear friends, brevity, as I explain on page 572 of my speech, is indeed the soul of wit." Boom—the perfect opening joke.

Deploy it at speech openings or client meetings: it disarms tension, eases stress, and builds rapport. For gynecologists, florists, or poultry farmers alike, success stems from contextual surprise, not joke quality. Otherwise, we'd all be comedians, not balancing books or doing pap smears.
