How to Properly Rename OneNote Notebooks: Change the Actual Folder Name

As a seasoned OneNote user with years of experience managing digital notebooks for projects and teams, I know how frustrating it can be when simple tasks feel elusive. OneNote excels as a free, robust note-taking app—superior to many alternatives for its seamless syncing across devices. But renaming a notebook isn't as straightforward as it seems.

Right-clicking a notebook in the OneNote app and selecting Properties reveals a Display Name field. However, editing this only updates the app's label—it doesn't change the underlying folder name in your storage.

To truly rename the notebook folder, use OneNote Online:

1. Sign in to OneNote Online with your Microsoft account.

2. On the My notebooks page, click Manage and Delete in the top right. This opens your OneDrive storage.

3. Navigate to the Documents folder (often under OneDrive Documents).

4. Right-click the notebook file and select Rename. Enter your new name—this updates the actual folder name, syncing across all devices.

This method ensures consistency everywhere OneNote runs, from desktop to mobile. I've relied on it for organizing client projects and personal journals without a hitch.
