Microsoft OneNote is a powerful, free app for note-taking, project management, and more. Discover how OneNote excels in project management for small teams.
Depending on your usage, you might need to secure sensitive notebook content. While OneNote isn't ideal for storing passwords—use a dedicated password manager instead—it offers robust section-level password protection for other confidential info.
To get started, open OneNote desktop app and the target notebook. Right-click a section tab and select Password Protect This Section. In the sidebar, click Set Password to add one or Remove Password to disable.
Enter and confirm your password twice. Warning: There's no recovery if you forget it, so memorize it or store securely in a password manager. Review options via Password Options: adjust idle lock time or enable instant locking on exit. Use Ctrl + Alt + L to lock all protected sections immediately.
