How I Skyrocketed My Productivity by Ditching TV: 5 Real-Life Strategies

As I hung the last picture frame in my bedroom, I realized I was finally settled into my new apartment. Plates were stacked in kitchen cupboards, clothes hung neatly in the closet, furniture positioned just right, and no boxes remained. I sank onto the couch to savor the moment, feet up—then it hit me: no cable or internet. In the moving chaos, I'd forgotten to schedule installation.

What now? I wondered. No TV to zone out to, no Netflix. I called a friend to meet at a local bar, avoiding the boredom trap at home. Drinking wasn't a sustainable fix, though.

Months without cable or internet—once 'essentials'—have transformed my routine. I've embraced the freedom and unlocked new productivity levels. Here are five ways I've made the most of it:

1. I read more.
I used to nod off after a few pre-bed pages. Now, instead of binge-watching or channel-surfing, I devour books for hours, tackling that ever-growing reading list.

2. I organize more.
To combat boredom and free up time, I plan ahead. Sundays, I map my week:
I pre-select outfits for smoother mornings—no closet indecision. Thursday: chinos and gray sweater. Friday: jeans and blue sweater.
I also meal-plan in three steps, saving time, money, and eating healthier.

3. I educate myself.
I downloaded Duolingo. Learn 20+ languages at your pace via phone. Set daily goals—5 minutes or more—and build streaks. I'm reviving high school French, 20 minutes daily.

4. I work out more.
Already a runner, my extra time fuels more training: morning runs, evening volleyball or yoga. Exercise benefits body and mind, slashing stress and boosting endorphins.

5. I learn more.
Craving local news, I hooked up an old antenna and caught a fascinating PBS WWII special world. Cable might've skipped it, but the insights enrich my weekly trivia nights.

I value downtime—some days demand rest. But TV shouldn't be the default. Internet's coming soon (phones limit us), yet I'll skip cable post-baseball season, hooked on this productivity surge.
