From Job Loss to Freelance Freedom: Why I've Never Regretted Going Solo

The Netherlands boasts around one million self-employed professionals, with thousands more joining each year. At the start of 2016, 38% of those registered with the Chamber of Commerce were women—that's 380,000 female entrepreneurs. I'm proud to be one of them, having launched my freelance career in early 2016. Not once have I second-guessed that decision.

Lost Job, Then What? Become a Freelancer?

In mid-2015, I received the devastating news that I was losing my job. I was just a few months pregnant and had recently bought a house with my husband that needed full renovations. The timing felt like a punch to the gut, robbing some of the joy from my pregnancy as worries mounted.

Birth of My Daughter

My daughter arrived in July 2015. Maternity leave and unemployment benefits gave me breathing room to bond with her and reflect on my next steps. What did I truly want to do?

Another Birth: The Step to the Chamber of Commerce

I applied aggressively for jobs but got few responses. The idea of starting my own business, however, excited me. With small gigs trickling in and no job offers materializing, I took the leap. Backed by my supportive husband, I registered with the Chamber of Commerce on January 1, surrounded by family, and opened a business bank account. Dreaming of freelancing became my reality.

Do What Makes You Happy

Nearly eight months in, it's early days, but I'm thrilled with my choice. Since January, I've focused solely on work that energizes and fulfills me. Every hour invested feels rewarding—a stark contrast to my previous role.

Why Become Self-Employed?

Freelancing often gets a bad rap: underpayment, unpaid admin time, and more. Yet countless self-employed pros wouldn't trade their independence for a traditional job. Never say never, but that's how I feel.

Here are key reasons many freelancers cherish their path:

  • Freedom first: Ultimate flexibility in work and life.
  • No rigid corporate rules (just your own!).
  • Potential for higher earnings (though rarely the top motivator).

Earning more is a nice bonus for successful ventures, but not the driving force for most freelancers.

On freedom—the top perk—many crave control over tasks and schedules, yet often work longer hours than in their old jobs. It's a labor of love.
