I'm a generally happy person, working just 16 hours a week in a low-stress reception role. My daughter's childcare is exceptionally well-organized and full of love. Yet, blending work with parenting feels like a constant challenge.
Now at school age, her calendar is filling up with playdates, kids' parties, sports, and swimming lessons—which I schedule for my days off. This reduces my flexibility for my employer, and it bothers me. Striking the right balance is tough: I want to be reliable at work without shortchanging my daughter.
The first two years at my current job, I was highly flexible. She wasn't in school yet, so I could drop her with grandparents occasionally. Earlier this year, I even added an extra day a week for three months to cover maternity leave, easily arranged with in-laws.
My daughter disliked missing friend meetups, but after I explained it was temporary, she was fine—grandparents' house is fun too.
But what if I've promised a Wednesday playdate with her friend and unexpected work arises? I'd feel like a bad mom. Or if I can't cover Friday due to swimming lessons, I'm not a stellar colleague.
And this is with only 16 hours a week—perhaps that's precisely why! How do you manage it all to keep everyone satisfied?
