Every Excel workbook includes at least one worksheet. Adding multiple worksheets helps organize complex data, with each appearing as a tab at the bottom of the Excel window for seamless navigation and management.

Insert a New Worksheet Tab

To add a new worksheet, right-click the tab where you want to insert it, then select the Insert icon (plus sign) at the end of the tab bar.

The new tab receives the next sequential number, regardless of position. For instance, inserting after Sheet3 creates Sheet6.

Rename a Worksheet Tab

Default names like Sheet1, Sheet2 work initially, but descriptive names improve organization. Double-click the tab or right-click and choose Rename, enter a unique name, and press Enter.

Scroll Through Multiple Tabs

With many tabs, not all fit on screen. Use the three dots at either end of the tab bar to scroll left or right.

Alternatively, click the left/right arrows beside the tabs for scrolling and other functions, as shown in the tooltip.

Display More Tabs at Once

Reclaim space by shrinking the horizontal scroll bar. Hover over the three vertical dots to the left until the cursor shows double arrows, then drag right to expand the tab area.

Copy or Move a Worksheet Tab

Duplicate or relocate tabs within the workbook or to another open file. Right-click the tab and select Move or Copy.

In the dialog, select the target Workbook from the dropdown (must be open). Choose Before sheet position. Check Create a copy to duplicate; otherwise, it moves. Click OK.

Copies retain data and append a number to the name (rename as needed). Moves keep the original name.

For quick intra-workbook moves, click and drag the tab: hold until a triangle appears, then drop at the desired spot.

Delete a Worksheet Tab

Right-click the tab and select Delete. Confirmation appears for sheets with data—proceed only if sure, as data is lost and may break references elsewhere. 5 Excel document settings you should never forget to check when sharing spreadsheets to avoid exposing hidden custom settings.

You cannot delete the last remaining worksheet.
