Age as a Major Barrier to Career Opportunities for Dutch Professionals: LinkedIn Insights

Is age just a number? Dutch professionals beg to differ. LinkedIn's global Opportunity Index 2020 survey of 18- to 65-year-olds reveals how barriers like age limit career advancement. Despite greater optimism about life and career success compared to other Europeans, Dutch workers identify age as their top obstacle to seizing opportunities.

Baby Boomers Face Declining Confidence
Dutch professionals prioritize fulfilling roles, but age-related hurdles persist. Over half of Baby Boomers (55-65) and more than a quarter of Gen X (39-54) see their age as a barrier, especially in gaining recognition or switching careers. Younger Gen Z workers also struggle, with 31% citing limited experience as a key issue.

The Power of a Strong Network Cannot Be Overstated
Connections drive better opportunities, yet building them is challenging. Most recognize the value of networks, but only 22% actively pursue networking chances.
