Master the 5 Levels of Leadership: Climb from Position to Pinnacle with John C. Maxwell

Whether you're a business executive, softball coach, classroom teacher, volunteer coordinator, or parent—or all of these—you're a leader. But where are you on your leadership journey, and how do you advance? As a leadership expert with decades of experience training millions worldwide, I've developed the 5 Levels of Leadership to help leaders like you assess your position and elevate your effectiveness. Let's explore each level and the steps to reach the pinnacle.

Level 1: Position—People Follow Because They Have To

The entry level of leadership relies solely on your title. No skill or effort is required; anyone can be appointed. While a position is a starting point, depending on it alone limits influence to leverage like job security. Use this stage to build self-discipline and priorities, preparing for growth.

Level 2: Permission—People Follow Because They Want To

Here, followers choose you because of relationships. Invest time in knowing your people, building trust and respect through genuine care. Strong connections at this level form the foundation for higher influence.

Level 3: Production—People Follow Because of What You've Done for the Organization

Results drive loyalty. Delivering outcomes boosts credibility, solves problems, and elevates team morale and performance. Each level builds on the previous: maintain permission while adding production strategies.

Level 4: People Development—People Follow Because of What You've Done for Them

Focus on reproducing leaders by mentoring and investing in others. Developing potential—whether evident or hidden—multiplies impact and advances the organization's mission.

Level 5: Pinnacle—People Follow Because of Who You Are and What You Represent

The summit demands lifelong commitment. Pinnacle leaders create legacies, foster top-tier organizations, and transcend boundaries. Their influence endures through reputation and opportunities created for others.

Your leadership height hinges on influence. Grow it intentionally, and you'll touch countless lives. Never underestimate one influential person's power.
