How you manage your emails can be bad for your health

New research suggests it's not just the size of the emails that causes stress; it's our well-meaning habits and our need to stay in control that backfire on us. The researchers asked nearly 2,000 working people in a variety of industries, sectors and jobs about their experiences of using email. The study examined whether factors such as technology, behavior, demographics and personality play a role in the perception of email pressure.

The research suggests that many people have developed some bad habits when it comes to managing email. Nearly half of those surveyed have emails sent to their inboxes automatically (push notifications), and 62 percent left their email on all day. Those who checked their email in the early morning and late evening may think they are making progress, but they could make it worse, as the study showed that these habits are linked to higher levels of stress and pressure.
