Rude behavior at work—such as criticizing, sarcasm, and condescending comments—tends to spread contagiously, according to a new study from organizational psychology experts. While less severe than overt hostility like bullying, harassment, or threats, rudeness is far more prevalent in workplaces and profoundly affects employee well-being and performance.
Participants responded to surveys and completed performance tasks three times daily over 10 consecutive workdays. This rigorous methodology enabled researchers to pinpoint how and why rudeness propagates in corporate settings.
The study revealed that encountering rudeness triggers mental fatigue, eroding self-control and prompting reciprocal rudeness later in the day. These unintentional "rude spirals" flourish in "political" environments, where personal agendas often overshadow organizational goals.
