Study: Sending Work Emails After Hours Increases Stress, Influenced by Personality

A recent study reveals that while email is essential for most jobs, it often triggers stress—and personality traits significantly shape our email habits and stress responses. Big-picture thinkers are far more likely to check emails during vacations, weekends, or before and after work compared to detail-focused individuals. Sending emails outside regular hours proves particularly stressful, as does the high volume of emails exchanged. Managers, regardless of personality, commonly report feeling overwhelmed, wasting time on email, and experiencing heightened stress. These findings stem from an online survey of 368 participants who first completed a validated personality assessment.
