Entry-level resumes

When submitting an entry-level resume, keep things simple. Usually this means a bit of personal information, a brief description of your experience, education, skills, and references. Design for entry-level resumes tends to be fairly simple, for fear of being pretentious. There's nothing wrong with this, as long as the template you use is clean and easy to read.

This is where you can sell yourself as ambitious and motivated. Someone who will go out of their way to make sure they are doing a good job and to help their employers and colleagues.
  • Stay to the point. The hiring manager reading your resume is pressed for time. They're not looking to read your bio, but rather quickly assess whether you're right for the job.
  • Keep language simple. Avoid jargon and make sure whatever language you use leads to the job description. For example, if the company is looking for someone who is “hard working”, with a “great attention to detail”, try to use these exact phrases somewhere on your resume.
  • Bragging about extracurricular activities. This is where you can show your personality, make it clear that you are motivated, healthy, keeping yourself busy and will be able to get on with your future colleagues.

Graduate / mid-level resumes

In general, graduate/mid-level resumes will need more information than entry-level resumes. While most of the headers will be the same, there are some subtle differences to be aware of.

Space on graduate level resumes is at a premium, make every word count. To help you do this, try to meet some of these points;

  • Include your core skills and competencies at the top . In the The objectives At the top of the resume, explain not only what you want to achieve or what you're looking for, but also what your core competencies are that help you stand out from the crowd. This paragraph should grab the hiring manager's attention and compel them to keep reading.
  • Add more information to your employment history. Compared to entry-level resumes, mid-level resumes should detail more information in the Experience/Employment section. This covers achievements in each position (quantified if possible) as well as their responsibilities.

Creative resume

For a long time, creative resumes looked a lot like other professional resumes, but because the competition for creative positions is so fierce, your resume in these industries needs to stand out and speak for itself.

In essence, it should reflect your own style of creativity, personality, and could essentially be a part of your portfolio in and of itself. Unfortunately, most of these types of creative resumes are only available as .PSD files, but we've managed to locate some of the best ones that can be edited in Microsoft Word, just to keep things simple. And of course we also have some tips here.

  • Don't overdo it . Some creative professionals go all out (read Far away) trying to stand out. This suggests an inability to be subtly impressive, which is often what people are looking for. Your resume should be able to calmly express the work you do, without being obnoxious.
  • Include numbers . Many companies err on the side of caution when it comes to creativity, largely because creativity is hard to quantify. If you can show figures that express how your creative ideas turned into sales, profits, or brand awareness, your potential employers' confidence in you will increase.
  • Have an online presence .
