How to finally add a thesaurus to Google Docs

If you find yourself struggling to find the perfect word while typing something in Google Docs, a new plugin could come in handy. Writefull adds a much-needed thesaurus so you no longer have to switch to another website or open Word when looking up synonyms.

Once you add Writefull to Google Docs, you'll need to grant the app access to your Google account. Writefull needs the following permissions to work:

  • View and manage your documents in Google Drive..
  • View and manage the data associated with the application..
  • Allow this application to run when you are not present.
  • Connect to an external service..

Once you grant Writefull access to your Google account, you should find it under the Plugins menu. Unfortunately, Writefull doesn't work the same way the thesaurus works in Word. You cannot right click on a word to see its synonyms. Instead, you have to open Writefull from the menu.

The plugin is located on the right side of the screen. You can highlight the text you want to find and press the Paste from selection key or you can just enter the word you want to search for. Your results are sorted by similarity and you can quickly insert your selection into your document by clicking Paste button.

How to finally add a thesaurus to Google Docs

So how good is Writefull? There were some surprisingly common words that are not included in the Writefull database. That said, Writefull also allows you to search for phrases (not just single words), recognizes conjugated verbs and plural nouns, and uses artificial intelligence to sort the results for you.

What do you think of Writefull? Is it the thesaurus you've been waiting for to use with Google Docs? Let us know in the comments.
