How to Disable Read Receipts in Outlook: A Step-by-Step Guide

Read receipts in Microsoft Outlook notify senders when you've opened their emails, but unlike social media apps, they're not enabled by default. Recipients can often opt out on a case-by-case basis. The good news? You can easily control both sending and receiving them without affecting others' settings.

To adjust these, navigate to File > Options > Mail > Tracking. Here, you'll find options for requesting receipts from others and responding to their requests.

Stop Requesting Read Receipts

If you prefer not to request delivery or read receipts when sending emails, ensure these boxes are unchecked:

  • “Delivery receipt confirming the message was delivered to the recipient's email server”
  • “Read receipt confirming the recipient viewed the message”

Prevent Sending Read Receipts

To stop automatic responses to read receipt requests, under "For any message that requests a read receipt,” select Never send a read receipt. For more control, choose Always ask each time.
