How to Create Reusable Microsoft Word Templates from Your Frequent Documents

But what about those documents you edit repeatedly, where no perfect template exists online? As someone who's streamlined workflows for teams using Office for over a decade, I recommend creating your own custom template—it's straightforward and transformative.

First, build your base document, spreadsheet, or presentation with all essential content, formatting, and placeholders. This becomes your reusable foundation.

Then, go to File > Save As, and crucially, select Word Template (*.dotx) from the Save as type dropdown—not the standard .docx. This ensures every future use starts fresh.

When you open the .dotx file, it launches as "Document1" in Word (or equivalent in Excel/PowerPoint). Your first Save prompts a new filename, preserving the original template intact. This method lets you iterate from a consistent base every time.
