Microsoft Office includes features designed to streamline workflows, but some can feel like unnecessary hurdles. Backstage view—accessed via the File menu—is one example. It's handy for OneDrive cloud saves, but if you work locally, it adds extra steps that slow you down. As a longtime Office power user, I've optimized countless settings like this to boost efficiency.

Here's a quick fix to bypass Backstage entirely.
You can add a Save icon to the Quick Access Toolbar for instant local saving. This tweak works in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint—changing it in one app updates the others automatically.
Go to the File tab, then select Options from the left menu.

In the Options dialog, click Save on the left.
In the 'Save documents' section, check Don't show the Backstage when opening or saving files. Click OK to apply.

This skips Backstage for saves, opening the standard Save As dialog directly. Note: It may not affect opening files via the File tab. Use the Ctrl + O shortcut instead for instant access to the Open dialog.
Backstage handles background tasks like recovering unsaved files—see How to Recover an Unsaved Microsoft Word Document for details. But for routine saves, skipping it shaves off precious seconds that add up over time. The File menu remains one click away when needed.
