Excel Tip: How to Correctly Display Ampersands (&) in Headers and Footers

Ever noticed that typing an ampersand (&) in an Excel header or footer causes it to vanish upon printing? AT&T turns into ATT, and A&W becomes AW. This happens because Excel interprets a single & as the start of a special formatting code.

Fortunately, there's a straightforward fix used by Excel professionals for years: simply type two ampersands (&&) where you want a single one to appear. For example:

  • AT&&T displays as AT&T
  • A&&W displays as A&W
  • H&&R Block displays as H&R Block

Just create your header or footer as usual, and double up on the ampersands in your text.

This tip is invaluable if your company's branding includes logos or names with ampersands in headers and footers—it ensures professional, accurate prints every time.
